Sahih al-Bukhari 91 (Book 3, Hadith 33) #91
Lost Items & Responsibility

SUMMARY: The Prophet (ﷺ) taught that when one finds a lost item, they should recognize and remember its tying material and container, make public announcement for one year, then utilize it but give it to its owner if he comes. He also taught that a lost camel will find water and food until its owner finds it. Lastly, he said that a lost sheep is either for the finder or someone else or the wolf.

Narrated Zaid bin Khalid Al-Juhani: A man asked the Prophet about the picking up of a "Luqata" (fallen lost thing). The Prophet replied, "Recognize and remember its tying material and its container, and make public announcement (about it) for one year, then utilize it but give it to its owner if he comes". Then the person asked about the lost camel. On that, the Prophet got angry and his cheeks or his Face became red and he said, "You have no concern with it as it has its water container, and its feet and it will reach water, and eat (the leaves) of trees till its owner finds it". The man then asked about the lost sheep. The Prophet replied, "It is either for you, for your brother (another person) or for the wolf".

QUICK LESSONS:
Recognise & remember details of found items; Make public announcements; Utilise after 1 year; Return items to rightful owners

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith teaches us about responsibility when we come across something that is lost. We should recognize what the item looks like and remember any details about how it was tied up or what container it was in. We should then make an announcement about this item so people know to look out for it in case the owner comes looking for it. After one year has passed, we can use the item but if the owner does come looking for their property we must give back to them as soon as possible. The Prophet also teaches us about responsibility towards animals; if you find a camel you don't need to worry because they will be able to find food and water until their owners come looking for them. If you find a sheep however, you can keep it or give it away but be aware of wild animals who may take advantage of this situation too! This hadith reminds us of our responsibilities towards others even when things are not ours; we must always act with integrity and kindness no matter what situation arises!
