Sahih Muslim 797a (Book 6, Hadith 288) #9013
The Fragrance of Faith

SUMMARY: The hadith compares the believers who recite the Quran to oranges and dates, and the hypocrites who recite the Quran to basil and colocynth.

Abu Musa al-Ash'ari reported Allah's Messenger as saying: A believer who recites the Qur'an is like an orange whose fragrance is sweet and whose taste is sweet; a believer who does not recite the Qur'an is like a date which has no fragrance but has a sweet taste; and the hypocrite who recites the Qur'an is like a basil whose fragrance is sweet, but whose taste is bitter; and a hypocrite who does not recite the Qur'an is like the Colocynth which has no fragrance and has a bitter taste.

QUICK LESSONS:
Strive for both inner piety as well as outwardly piety in order to truly embody faith.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about how faith can be seen in a person's actions. It compares believers who recite the Quran to oranges and dates, which have both a sweet fragrance and taste. On the other hand, it compares hypocrites who recite the Quran to basil and colocynth, which have a sweet fragrance but bitter taste. This comparison shows that although someone may appear pious on the outside by reciting verses from Qur'an, their true faith can only be judged by their actions. It also implies that one should strive for both inner piety as well as outwardly piety in order to truly embody faith.
