Sahih al-Bukhari 89 (Book 3, Hadith 31) #89
Reassurance of the Prophet

SUMMARY: This hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) reassuring his wives that he has not divorced them.

Narrated 'Umar: My Ansari neighbor from Bani Umaiya bin Zaid who used to live at 'Awali Al-Medina and used to visit the Prophet by turns. He used to go one day and I another day. When I went I used to bring the news of that day regarding the Divine Inspiration and other things, and when he went, he used to do the same for me. Once my Ansari friend, in his turn (on returning from the Prophet), knocked violently at my door and asked if I was there". I became horrified and came out to him. He said, "Today a great thing has happened". I then went to Hafsa and saw her weeping. I asked her, "Did Allah's Messenger divorce you all?" She replied, "I do not know". Then, I entered upon the Prophet and said while standing, "Have you divorced your wives?" The Prophet replied in the negative. On that I said, "Allahu-Akbar (Allah is Greater)".

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) reassuring his wives that he has not divorced them. It was narrated by 'Umar who was an Ansari neighbor from Bani Umaiya bin Zaid who used to live at 'Awali Al-Medina and used to visit the Prophet (ﷺ). He went one day and Umar another day. When Umar went, he would bring news of what happened during his visit regarding divine inspiration and other things. On this particular occasion, when Umar's Ansari friend returned from visiting the prophet, he knocked on Umar's door in a state of excitement and asked if Umar was there. When Umar came out to him, his friend said something great had happened. Upon hearing this news, Umar became worried that perhaps Allah's Messenger had divorced all of his wives so he went to Hafsa's house where she was weeping but she did not know what had happened either. When they both entered upon the Prophet (ﷺ), they asked if he had divorced all of his wives but instead were met with a negative response which made them exclaim "Allahu-Akbar" in relief as it meant Allah is greater than any difficulty or hardship they may have faced due to such an event occurring. This incident serves as a reminder for us all that no matter how difficult our situation may seem at times we should always remember that Allah is greater than any difficulty we face and will always be there for us when we need Him most.
