Sahih Muslim 702 (Book 6, Hadith 51) #8776
Praying on a Donkey's Back

SUMMARY: The hadith is about Anas b. Malik observing prayer on the back of his donkey with his face turned in a direction other than the Qibla, and he said that he would not have done so if he had not seen the Prophet (PBUH) doing it.

Anas b. Sirin reported: We met Anas b. Malik as he came to Syria at a place known as 'Ain-al-Tamar and saw him observing prayer on the back of his donkey with his face turned in that direction. (Hammam one of the narrators) pointed towards the left of Qibla, so I said to him: I find you observing prayer towards the side other than that of Qibla. Upon this he said: Had I not seen the Messenger of Allah doing like this, I would not have done so at all.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about Anas b. Malik who was travelling to Syria and stopped at a place called 'Ain-al-Tamar to observe prayer on the back of his donkey with his face turned in a direction other than the Qibla. When Hammam, one of the narrators pointed out this mistake, Anas replied that he would not have done so if he hadn't seen Prophet Muhammad ﷺ doing it himself. This shows us how important it is to follow our beloved prophet's example in all aspects of life and how we should strive to emulate him as much as possible even when we are travelling or away from home. It also teaches us that we should always be mindful of our actions and take care to ensure they are in line with Islamic teachings even when no one else is watching us or pointing out our mistakes.
