Sahih Muslim 643b (Book 5, Hadith 287) #8601
Praying with the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) used to observe prayers like the people of his time, but he would delay it a little and shorten it.

Jabir b. Samura reported: The Messenger of Allah used to observe prayers like your prayers, but he would delay the prayer after nightfall to a little after the time you observed it, and he would shorten the prayer.

QUICK LESSONS:
Observe prayers according to one's culture and times; Be mindful about how much time is spent on rituals; Shorten rituals without compromising their essence or importance

EXPLANATIONS:
The hadith narrated by Jabir b. Samura tells us that the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) used to observe prayers like those of his time. However, he would delay the prayer after nightfall a little and shorten it as well. This teaches us that although we should follow our religious practices in accordance with our times and cultures, we should also be mindful of how much time we spend on them and not overdo them unnecessarily. We can also learn from this hadith that even though we may have certain rituals or practices that are part of our culture or religion, if they become too long or tedious then they can be shortened without compromising their essence or importance.
