Sahih al-Bukhari 886 (Book 11, Hadith 11) #857
Materialism and Vanity in Islam

SUMMARY: The hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) warning against the dangers of materialism and vanity.

Narrated 'Abdullah bin 'Umar: 'Umar bin Al-Khattab saw a silken cloak (being sold) at the gate of the Mosque and said to Allah's Apostle, "I wish you would buy this to wear on Fridays and also on occasions of the arrivals of the delegations". Allah's Messenger replied, "This will be worn by a person who will have no share (reward) in the Hereafter". Later on similar cloaks were given to Allah's Messenger and he gave one of them to 'Umar bin Al-Khattab. On that 'Umar said, "O Allah's Messenger ! You have given me this cloak although on the cloak of Atarid (a cloak merchant who was selling that silken cloak at the gate of the mosque) you passed such and such a remark". Allah's Messenger replied, "I have not given you this to wear". And so 'Umar bin Al-Khattab gave it to his pagan brother in Mecca to wear.

QUICK LESSONS:
Focus on your spiritual goals instead of worldly possessions; be generous towards others instead of hoarding for yourself ; show humility over prideful behavior .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks to the importance of avoiding materialistic pursuits and vanity in Islam. It tells us that those who are focused on worldly possessions will not receive a reward in the afterlife. The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) was offered a silken cloak at the gate of the mosque by Atarid, but he refused it because he knew it would be a distraction from his spiritual goals. He later received similar cloaks as gifts but warned Umar bin Al-Khattab not to wear them as they were symbols of vanity and material wealth. Instead, Umar gave it to his pagan brother in Mecca to wear. This hadith teaches us that we should focus on our spiritual goals rather than worldly possessions if we want to receive rewards from Allah in the hereafter. We should also avoid being vain or showing off our wealth as this can lead us away from Allah's path.
