Sahih Muslim 572k (Book 5, Hadith 122) #8436
Human Forgetfulness and Compensatory Prostrations

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) led a prayer of five rak'ahs, but the people thought he had said four. He reminded them that he was human and could forget just like them, and then performed two prostrations as compensation for his forgetfulness.

'Abdullah (b. Mas'ud) reported: The Messenger of Allah led us five (rak'ahs in prayer). We said: Messenger of Allah, has the prayer been extended? He said: What is the matter? They said: You have said five (rak'ahs). He (the Holy Prophet) said: Verily I am a human being like you. I remember as you remember and I forget just as you forget. He then performed two prostrations as (compensation of) forgetfulness.

QUICK LESSONS:
Be mindful when praying so you can avoid making mistakes or forgetting parts due to carelessness or distraction

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the importance of being mindful in prayer and how even the Prophet Muhammad himself was not immune to human forgetfulness. When the people noticed that he had said five rak’ahs instead of four, they asked if the prayer had been extended. The Prophet reminded them that he was a human being just like them who could make mistakes and forget things just as they did. To compensate for his mistake, he performed two prostrations at the end of his prayer as an act of repentance for forgetting something in his recitation or actions during salat. This teaches us to be mindful when we pray so we can avoid making mistakes or forgetting parts of our prayers due to carelessness or distraction; however if we do make a mistake or forget something during our salat, it is important to remember that Allah is forgiving and merciful so we should repent sincerely with prostration at the end of our prayers in order to seek His forgiveness.
