Sahih Muslim 397a (Book 4, Hadith 47) #8052
The Proper Way to Pray

SUMMARY: This hadith explains the proper way to perform prayer and emphasizes the importance of reciting takbir and reciting from the Quran.

Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah entered the mosque and a person also entered therein and offered prayer, and then came and paid salutation to the Messenger of Allah . The Messenger of Allah returned his salutation and said: Go back and pray, for you have not offered the prayer. He again prayed as he had prayed before, and came to the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon. him) and saluted him. The Messenger of Allah returned the salutation and said: Go back and say prayer, for you have not offered the prayer. This (act of repeating the prayer) was done three times. Upon this the person said: By Him Who hast sent you with Truth, whatever better I can do than this, please teach me. He (the Holy Prophet) said: When you get up to pray, recite takbir, and then recite whatever you conveniently can from the Qur'an, then bow down and remain quietly in that position, then raise your- self and stand erect; then prostrate yourself and remain quietly in that attitude; then raise yourself and sit quietly; and do that throughout all your prayers.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith explains how one should properly perform prayer. It is narrated by Abu Huraira that Prophet Muhammad entered a mosque and saw a man praying. After he finished his prayer, he came up to greet Prophet Muhammad but was told to go back and pray again as he did not do it correctly. He repeated this process three times until finally, when asked what else he could do better, Prophet Muhammad instructed him on how to properly pray. He said that when one stands up for prayer they should recite takbir first then recite whatever they can from the Quran before bowing down in prostration and remaining in that position quietly before standing back up again. This hadith emphasizes the importance of reciting takbir at the beginning of each prayer as well as reciting from the Quran during prayers which are both essential components of performing prayers correctly according to Islamic teachings.
