Forgiveness of Inner Thoughts and Feelings

SUMMARY: Allah will forgive people for their inner thoughts and feelings as long as they do not speak or act upon them.

It is narrated on the authority of Abu Huraira that the Messenger of Allah observed: Verily Allah forgave my people the evil promptings which arise within their hearts as long as they did not speak about them or did not act upon them.
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدُ بْنُ مَنْصُورٍ، وَقُتَيْبَةُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ، وَمُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عُبَيْدٍ الْغُبَرِيُّ، - وَاللَّفْظُ لِسَعِيدٍ - قَالُوا حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عَوَانَةَ، عَنْ قَتَادَةَ، عَنْ زُرَارَةَ بْنِ أَوْفَى، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ‏ "‏ إِنَّ اللَّهَ تَجَاوَزَ لأُمَّتِي مَا حَدَّثَتْ بِهِ أَنْفُسَهَا مَا لَمْ يَتَكَلَّمُوا أَوْ يَعْمَلُوا بِهِ

We should strive to keep our hearts pure by avoiding negative thoughts and emotions that could lead us astray. Additionally, this hadith reminds us that Allah is always merciful towards His servants; He knows what lies in our hearts even when we don't say it out loud or act on it. Therefore, we should always seek His forgiveness whenever we feel like we have wronged Him in any way.
