Sahih Muslim 124a (Book 1, Hadith 234) #7499
The Gravest Wrongdoing

SUMMARY: This hadith explains the meaning of a verse from the Quran, which is that associating anything with Allah is the gravest wrongdoing.

It is narrated on the authority of 'Abdullah (b. Mas'ud) that when this verse was revealed: " It is those who believe and confound not their belief with wrongdoing" (vi. 82), the Companions of the Messenger of Allah wore greatly perturbed. They said: Who amongst us (is so fortunate) that he does not wrong himself? Upon this the Messenger of Allah remarked: It does not mean that which you presume It implies that which Luqman said to his son: O my son, do not associate anything with Allah, for indeed it is the gravest wrongdoing (xxxi. 13).

QUICK LESSONS:
Seek clarification when one is confused , avoid association with Allah , understand verses correctly according to context .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith explains a verse from the Quran which states that it is those who believe and do not mix their belief with wrongdoing. The Companions of Prophet Muhammad were confused by this and asked who among them was so fortunate as to never wrong themselves. In response to this confusion, Prophet Muhammad explained that this verse does not mean what they think it means but rather refers to what Luqman said to his son in another verse; do not associate anything with Allah for it is the gravest wrongdoing. This hadith teaches us that associating anything with Allah is considered a major sin and should be avoided at all costs. It also teaches us about how we should seek clarification when we are confused about something instead of assuming our own interpretations are correct.
