Sahih Muslim 123b (Book 1, Hadith 231) #7496
Rewards for Good Deeds Done in Ignorance

SUMMARY: The hadith is about the reward of good deeds done in ignorance before accepting Islam.

Hakim b. Hizam reported to 'Urwa b. Zubair that he said to the Messenger of Allah : Messenger of Allah, do you think if there is any reward (of the Lord with me on the Day of Resurrection) for the deeds of religious purification that I performed in the state of ignorance, such as charity, freeing a slave, cementing of blood-relations? Upon this he (the Messenger of Allah) said to him: You have accepted Islam with all the previous virtues that you had practised.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks of the rewards that one can receive from Allah for good deeds done in ignorance before accepting Islam. It is narrated by Hakim b. Hizam who reported to 'Urwa b. Zubair that he asked the Messenger of Allah if there was any reward with him on the Day of Resurrection for his deeds such as charity and freeing a slave which he performed while still in a state of ignorance. The Prophet replied that these virtues would be accepted and rewarded by Allah as long as they were done with sincerity and faithfulness towards Him alone. This hadith teaches us that even though we may have been ignorant or misguided at some point in our lives, if we sincerely repent and turn back to Allah then He will accept our repentance and forgive us for our past mistakes while rewarding us for any good deeds we may have done during this time too!
