Sahih Muslim 67 (Book 1, Hadith 133) #7398
The Unbelief of Slandering Lineage and Lamentation

SUMMARY: It is wrong to slander someone's lineage and to lament over the dead.

It is narrated on the authority of Abu Huraira that the Messenger of Allah (may peace and blessings be upon him) observed: Two (things) are found among men which are tantamount to unbelief: slandering one's lineage and lamentation on the dead.

QUICK LESSONS:
Respect others, be mindful of your words and actions when dealing with death or talking about other people’s families .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is narrated by Abu Huraira and it talks about two things that are considered as tantamount to unbelief. The first one is slandering someone's lineage which means speaking badly about their family or ancestors. The second one is lamenting over the dead which means crying excessively for a long period of time after someone has passed away. Both of these actions are seen as wrong in Islam because they can lead people away from faith in Allah and His Messenger. Therefore, it is important for Muslims to be mindful of their words and actions when dealing with death or talking about other people's families so that they do not fall into this type of unbelief.
