Sahih al-Bukhari 735 (Book 10, Hadith 129) #709
Raising Hands During Prayer

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) used to raise his hands up to the level of his shoulders when opening the prayer and on saying the Takbir for bowing, but not in prostrations.

Narrated Salim bin 'Abdullah: My father said, "Allah's Messenger used to raise both his hands up to the level of his shoulders when opening the prayer; and on saying the Takbir for bowing. And on raising his head from bowing he used to do the same and then say "Sami'a l-lahu liman hamidah, Rabbana wa laka l-hamd". And he did not do that (ie raising his hands) in prostrations.

QUICK LESSONS:
Raise both your hands up to shoulder level when opening prayer & on saying Takbir for bowing .
EXPLANATIONS:
The hadith narrated by Salim bin 'Abdullah states that Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) used to raise both his hands up to the level of his shoulders when opening the prayer and on saying the Takbir for bowing. This is a sign of humility and submission before Allah, as it is an act of supplication and seeking help from Him. It also shows respect towards Allah as one is asking Him for His blessings. On raising his head from bowing, he would do the same action but not in prostrations. This teaches us that we should always remember Allah in our prayers and ask Him for His mercy and guidance throughout our lives.
