Sahih al-Bukhari 7247 (Book 95, Hadith 2) #6961
The Adhan and Suhur

SUMMARY: This hadith explains that the call for prayer (Adhan) should not stop anyone from taking their Suhur, as it is not yet dawn.

Narrated Ibn Mas'ud: Allah's Messenger said, "The (call for prayer) Adhan of Bilal should not stop anyone of you from taking his Suhur for he pronounces the Adhan in order that whoever among you is praying the night prayer, may return (to eat his Suhur) and whoever among you is sleeping, may get up, for it is not yet dawn (when it is like this)". (Yahya, the sub-narrator stretched his two index fingers side ways).

Be mindful of time; Take advantage every moment before daybreak; Perform religious obligations such as eating pre-dawn meal or praying night prayers; Obey God's commands.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith explains the importance of the call for prayer, known as Adhan. It was narrated by Ibn Mas'ud who said that Allah's Messenger said that one should not be stopped from taking their pre-dawn meal, known as Suhur, when they hear the Adhan. The Prophet demonstrated this by stretching his two index fingers side ways to show that it is still dark outside and not yet dawn. This hadith teaches us to be mindful of our time and to take advantage of every moment we have before daybreak in order to perform our religious obligations such as eating our pre-dawn meal or praying night prayers.
