Sahih al-Bukhari 7212 (Book 93, Hadith 72) #6927
The Consequences of Dishonesty

SUMMARY: This hadith explains that Allah will not forgive those who withhold resources from travelers, break their promises for personal gain, or lie to deceive others.

Narrated Abu Huraira: Allah's Messenger said, "There will be three types of people whom Allah will neither speak to them on the Day of Resurrection nor will purify them from sins, and they will have a painful punishment: They are, I a man possessed superfluous water (more than he needs) on a way and he withholds it from the travelers. II a man who gives a pledge of allegiance to an Imam (ruler) and gives it only for worldly benefits, if the Imam gives him what he wants, he abides by his pledge, otherwise he does not fulfill his pledge; III and a man who sells something to another man after the 'Asr prayer and swears by Allah (a false oath) that he has been offered so much for it whereupon the buyer believes him and buys it although in fact, the seller has not been offered such a price".

QUICK LESSONS:
Be honest in all your dealings with others; Keep your promises; Help those in need; Do not deceive people by lying about prices or withholding resources from them; Repent sincerely if you have done any wrong deeds out of dishonesty .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the consequences of dishonesty. It warns us that if we are dishonest in our dealings with others, Allah will not forgive us and we will be punished on the Day of Resurrection. Specifically, it mentions three types of people who will be punished for their dishonesty. The first type is someone who has access to extra resources but withholds them from travelers in need. The second type is someone who makes a promise to an Imam or ruler only for personal gain and does not keep it when they do not get what they want. Lastly, it mentions someone who lies about the price of something they are selling after Asr prayer and deceives the buyer into paying more than what was actually offered. All these actions are considered dishonest and can lead to punishment from Allah if done intentionally without repentance or regret. Therefore, this hadith teaches us that honesty should always be practiced in our dealings with others as it is one of the most important values taught by Islam and can lead to rewards from Allah instead of punishment on the Day of Judgement.
