Sahih al-Bukhari 7176, 7177 (Book 93, Hadith 40) #6895
Consulting Elders Before Making Decisions

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) asked the people to go back and consult their 'Urafa' (elders) before making a decision about freeing captives.

Narrated 'Urwa bin Az-Zubair: Marwan bin Al-Hakam and Al-Miswar bin Makhrama told him that when the Muslims were permitted to set free the captives of Hawazin, Allah's Messenger said, "I do not know who amongst you has agreed (to it) and who has not. Go back so that your 'Urafa' may submit your decision to us". So the people returned and their 'Urafa' talked to them and then came back to Allah's Messenger and told him that the people had given their consent happily and permitted (their captives to be freed).

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about consulting elders before making decisions. It was narrated by Urwa bin Az-Zubair that when the Muslims were permitted to set free the captives of Hawazin, Prophet Muhammad asked them to go back and consult their 'Urafa' or elders first. The people returned and consulted with their elders who then came back to Prophet Muhammad and told him that they had given their consent happily for freeing the captives. This hadith teaches us that it is important to seek advice from wise people before taking any major decisions in life as they can provide valuable insight into our situation. It also shows us how much respect Prophet Muhammad gave to his companions by asking them for advice even though he was already aware of what should be done in this situation.
