Sahih al-Bukhari 7141 (Book 93, Hadith 5) #6860
The Wisdom of Not Wishing To Be Like Others

SUMMARY: Do not wish to be like anyone, except in two cases: a person who is given wealth and spends it righteously, and a person who is given knowledge of the Qur'an and Hadith and acts according to it.

Narrated 'Abdullah: Allah's Messenger said, "Do not wish to be like anyone, except in two cases: I A man whom Allah has given wealth and he spends it righteously. II A man whom Allah has given wisdom (knowledge of the Qur'an and the Hadith) and he acts according to it and teaches it to others".

EXPLANATIONS:
In this hadith, Allah's Messenger encourages us to not wish to be like anyone else. He explains that there are only two exceptions when we should strive for someone else's qualities; if they have been blessed with wealth by Allah, and use it in a righteous manner; or if they have been blessed with knowledge of the Qur'an or Hadith, act upon it, and teach others. This hadith teaches us that we should always strive for our own unique qualities rather than trying to imitate someone else. We should focus on developing our own talents so that we can use them in service of Allah.
