Punishment for Pre-Islamic Actions

SUMMARY: People will not be punished for their actions in the pre-Islamic period of ignorance if they do good in Islam, but those who do evil in Islam will be punished for their former and later bad deeds.

Narrated Ibn Mas'ud: A man said, "O Allah's Messenger ! Shall we be punished for what we did in the pre-Islamic Period of ignorance?" The Prophet said, "Whoever does good in Islam will not be punished for what he did in the Pre-lslamic Period of ignorance and whoever does evil in Islam will be punished for his former and later (bad deeds).
حَدَّثَنَا خَلاَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى، حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ، عَنْ مَنْصُورٍ، وَالأَعْمَشِ، عَنْ أَبِي وَائِلٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ مَسْعُودٍ ـ رضى الله عنه ـ قَالَ قَالَ رَجُلٌ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أَنُؤَاخَذُ بِمَا عَمِلْنَا فِي الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ قَالَ ‏ "‏ مَنْ أَحْسَنَ فِي الإِسْلاَمِ لَمْ يُؤَاخَذْ بِمَا عَمِلَ فِي الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ، وَمَنْ أَسَاءَ فِي الإِسْلاَمِ أُخِذَ بِالأَوَّلِ وَالآخِرِ

This hadith explains that people will not be held accountable or punished for any wrongdoings they may have done before embracing Islam. However, if someone does something wrong after becoming a Muslim, then they will be held responsible and punished accordingly. This hadith teaches us to always strive to do good deeds and stay away from evil ones so that we can avoid punishment from Allah. It also encourages us to take responsibility for our actions and reminds us that Allah is Just and Merciful at the same time.
