Sahih al-Bukhari 6778 (Book 86, Hadith 7) #6520
Punishment for Drunkenness

SUMMARY: The hadith is about the punishment of a drunk person and how it should be handled.

Narrated 'Ali bin Abi Talib: I would not feel sorry for one who dies because of receiving a legal punishment, except the drunk, for if he should die (when being punished), I would give blood money to his family because no fixed punishment has been ordered by Allah's Messenger for the drunk.

QUICK LESSONS:
Show compassion towards those who have made mistakes in life .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks to the issue of punishing those who are intoxicated with alcohol. It states that if someone dies while being punished for drunkenness, then their family should be given blood money as no fixed punishment has been set by Allah's Messenger. This suggests that punishments for intoxication should not be too severe and that mercy should be shown to those who have committed this sin. Furthermore, it implies that punishments must always remain within the bounds of justice and fairness as prescribed by Allah's Messenger. The hadith also teaches us to show compassion towards those who have made mistakes in life and to not take pleasure in their suffering or misfortune.
