Sahih al-Bukhari 6676, 6677 (Book 83, Hadith 54) #6421
The Consequences of False Oaths

SUMMARY: Taking a false oath to grab the property of a Muslim is an act that will incur Allah's Wrath.

Narrated 'Abdullah: Allah's Messenger said, "If somebody is ordered (by the ruler or the judge) to take an oath, and he takes a false oath in order to grab the property of a Muslim, then he will incur Allah's Wrath when he will meet Him". And Allah revealed in its confirmation: 'Verily! Those who purchase a small gain at the cost of Allah's covenants and their own oaths'. (3:77) (The sub-narrator added:) Al-Ash'ath bin Qais entered, saying, "What did Abu 'Abdur-Rahman narrate to you?" They said, "So-and-so," Al-Ash'ath said, "This verse was revealed in my connection. I had a well on the land of my cousin (and we had a dispute about it). I reported him to Allah 's Apostle who said (to me)".You should give evidence (ie witness) otherwise the oath of your opponent will render your claim invalid". I said, "Then he (my opponent) will take the oath, O Allah's Messenger ". Allah's Messenger said, "Whoever is ordered (by the ruler or the judge) to give an oath, and he takes a false oath in order to grab the property of a Muslim, then he will incur Allah's Wrath when he meets Him on the Day of Resurrection".

QUICK LESSONS:
Be honest and truthful when giving testimony or making an oath. Respect other people’s rights and possessions.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith explains the consequences of taking a false oath in order to grab the property of another Muslim. It is narrated by Abdullah that Allah's Messenger said that if someone takes such an oath they will incur Allah's wrath when they meet Him on the Day of Resurrection. This was confirmed by verse 3:77 in the Quran which states "Verily! Those who purchase a small gain at the cost of Allah's covenants and their own oaths." Al-Ash'ath bin Qais also shared his experience with this hadith as he was involved in a dispute over land with his cousin and was told by Prophet Muhammad to give evidence or else his opponent would take an oath which would render his claim invalid. Therefore it is clear from this hadith that taking false oaths for personal gain is not only wrong but also carries severe consequences on judgement day.
