Sahih al-Bukhari 6659, 6660 (Book 83, Hadith 38) #6405
The Consequences of Swearing Falsely

SUMMARY: This hadith is about the consequences of swearing falsely in order to grab someone else's property.

Narrated 'Abdullah: The Prophet said, "Whoever swears falsely in order to grab the property of a Muslim (or of his brother), Allah will be angry with him when he meets Him". Allah then revealed in confirmation of the above statement:--'Verily those who purchase a small gain at the cost of Allah's Covenant and their own oaths'. (3:77) Al-Ash'ath said, "This Verse was revealed regarding me and a companion of mine when we had a dispute about a well".

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith talks about the consequences of swearing falsely in order to grab someone else's property. It was narrated by Abdullah and Allah revealed a verse confirming this statement. The verse states that those who purchase a small gain at the cost of Allah's covenant and their own oaths will be punished when they meet Him. Al-Ash'ath said that this verse was revealed regarding him and his companion when they had a dispute about a well. This hadith teaches us that we should not swear falsely in order to take something from another person as it is against Allah's covenant and our own oaths which will lead to punishment from Allah when we meet Him. We should also be honest with each other and not try to take advantage of others for our own benefit as it is wrong according to Islam.
