Keeping Oaths and Making Expiations

SUMMARY: Abu Bakr As-Siddiq never broke his oaths until Allah revealed the expiation for them, and then he would make expiation if he found something better than what he had initially promised.

Narrated 'Aisha: Abu Bakr As-Siddiq had never broken his oaths till Allah revealed the expiation for the oaths. Then he said, "If I take an oath to do something and later on I find something else better than the first one, then I do what is better and make expiation for my oath".

QUICK LESSONS:
Strive to keep your promises/oaths even if there are benefits in breaking them. Make appropriate atonements if you break your promise/oath unintentionally or unknowingly .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about keeping one's promises and making expiations when necessary. Abu Bakr As-Siddiq was known for his honesty and integrity, so much so that it was said that he never broke an oath until Allah revealed the expiation for them. This means that even if there were times when it seemed like breaking an oath would be beneficial, Abu Bakr still kept his word. However, once Allah revealed the concept of making an expiation to replace a broken promise or oath, Abu Bakr then chose to do what was better in any given situation while still fulfilling his obligations by making an appropriate expiation. This teaches us to always strive to keep our promises but also shows us that we can make up for any mistakes we may have made in this regard by offering a suitable form of atonement.
