Sahih al-Bukhari 6368 (Book 80, Hadith 65) #6119
Seeking Refuge in Allah

SUMMARY: This hadith is about seeking refuge from Allah from various afflictions and sins, and asking for forgiveness.

Narrated 'Aisha: The Prophet used to say, "O Allah! I seek refuge with You from laziness and geriatric old age, from all kinds of sins and from being in debt; from the trial and affliction of the grave and from the punishment in the grave; from the affliction of the Fire and from the punishment of the Fire; and from the evil of the affliction of wealth; and I seek refuge with You from the affliction of poverty, and I seek refuge with You from the affliction of Al-Mesiah Ad-Dajjal. O Allah! Wash away my sins with the water of snow and hail, and cleanse my heart from all the sins as a white garment is cleansed from the filth, and let there be a long distance between me and my sins, as You made East and West far from each other".

EXPLANATIONS:
In this hadith, the Prophet Muhammad is teaching us to seek refuge in Allah from all kinds of sins and afflictions. He asks for protection from laziness, old age, debt, the trial of the grave, punishment in the grave, punishment of fire and evil of wealth. He also seeks refuge from poverty. The Prophet then asks for his sins to be washed away with snow and hail as a white garment is cleansed from filth. Lastly he prays that there should be a long distance between him and his sins as East and West are far apart. This hadith teaches us to always turn to Allah when we are faced with difficulties or hardships in life; it also encourages us to ask for forgiveness whenever we have committed any wrongdoings or mistakes so that our hearts can be cleansed again like a white garment being purified by snow or hail.
