Loving the Prophet More Than Yourself

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) taught that one cannot have true faith until they love him more than they love themselves.

Narrated 'Abdullah bin Hisham: We were in the company of the Prophet and he was holding the hand of 'Umar bin Al-Khattab.
حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي ابْنُ وَهْبٍ، قَالَ أَخْبَرَنِي حَيْوَةُ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو عَقِيلٍ، زُهْرَةُ بْنُ مَعْبَدٍ سَمِعَ جَدَّهُ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ هِشَامٍ، قَالَ كُنَّا مَعَ النَّبِيِّ وَهْوَ آخِذٌ بِيَدِ عُمَرَ بْنِ الْخَطَّابِ‏.‏

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith teaches us an important lesson about faith and devotion. It is narrated by Abdullah bin Hisham that he was in the company of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). Umar bin Al-Khattab expressed his love for the prophet saying that he was dearer to him than anything else except himself. The prophet replied saying that one cannot have true faith until they love him more than their own selves. This hadith emphasizes on how important it is for a believer to prioritize their devotion and loyalty towards Allah and His messenger over all other things including themselves. It teaches us about selflessness and how we should be willing to put our beloved prophet before ourselves if we want our faith to be complete.
