Sahih al-Bukhari 6255 (Book 79, Hadith 29) #6008
Forgiveness After Repentance

SUMMARY: The Prophet (PBUH) forgave Ka'b bin Malik and the Muslims who did not join the battle of Tabuk after fifty nights of repentance.

Narrated 'Abdullah bin Ka'b: I heard Ka'b bin Malik narrating (when he did not join the battle of Tabuk): Allah's Messenger forbade all the Muslims to speak to us. I would come to Allah's Messenger and greet him, and I would wonder whether the Prophet did move his lips to return to my greetings or not till fifty nights passed away. The Prophet then announced (to the people) Allah's forgiveness for us (acceptance of our repentance) at the time when he had offered the Fajr (morning) prayer.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about Allah's mercy and forgiveness for those who repent. It tells us that even if we make mistakes, Allah will forgive us if we sincerely repent. In this hadith, it is narrated that Ka’b bin Malik was one of the Muslims who did not join the battle of Tabuk. As a result, all other Muslims were forbidden to speak to him until he repented for his mistake. After fifty nights passed away, Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) announced Allah's forgiveness for him at the time when he offered Fajr prayer. This hadith teaches us that no matter how big our mistakes are, if we sincerely repent then Allah will forgive us and accept our repentance. We should also learn from this hadith that it is important to forgive others when they apologize or ask for forgiveness as well because it is a sign of mercy which reflects our faith in Islam.
