Sahih al-Bukhari 6087 (Book 78, Hadith 115) #5844
Repentance for Breaking Fast During Ramadan

SUMMARY: A man who had sexual relations with his wife while fasting in Ramadan asked the Prophet ﷺ for advice on how to repent. The Prophet ﷺ suggested he free a slave, fast two months consecutively, or feed sixty poor people. When the man said he could not do any of these things, the Prophet ﷺ told him to give a basket of dates in charity instead.

Narrated Abu Huraira: A man came to the Prophet and said, "I have been ruined for I have had sexual relation with my wife in Ramadan (while I was fasting)" The Prophet said (to him), "Manumit a slave". The man said, " I cannot afford that". The Prophet said, "(Then) fast for two successive months continuously". The man said, "I cannot do that". The Prophet said, "(Then) feed sixty poor persons". The man said, "I have nothing (to feed them with)". Then a big basket full of dates was brought to the Prophet. The Prophet said, "Where is the questioner? Go and give this in charity". The man said, "(Shall I give this in charity) to a poorer person than l? By Allah, there is no family in between these two mountains (of Medina) who are poorer than we". The Prophet then smiled till his premolar teeth became visible, and said, "Then (feed) your (family with it).

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about repentance and seeking forgiveness from Allah for breaking one's fast during Ramadan. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was asked by a man what he should do to repent after having sexual relations with his wife while fasting during Ramadan. The Prophet ﷺ suggested that he free a slave, fast two months consecutively or feed sixty poor people as atonement for his sin. When the man said that he could not afford any of these options, the Prophet ﷺ then told him to give away a basket full of dates in charity instead as an act of repentance and forgiveness from Allah SWT. This hadith teaches us that even if we cannot afford something big or expensive as an act of repentance, we can still do small acts such as giving charity which will be accepted by Allah SWT if done sincerely and with good intentions. It also teaches us that no matter how small our deeds are they can still be accepted by Allah SWT if done out of sincerity and love for Him alone without expecting anything in return except His pleasure and mercy upon us all.
