Sahih al-Bukhari 5993 (Book 78, Hadith 24) #5753
Enjoying Childhood and Prolonged Life

SUMMARY: The Prophet (PBUH) blessed a young girl with a long life and encouraged her to enjoy her childhood.

Narrated Sa'id: Um Khalid bint Khalid bin Sa'id said, "I came to Allah's Messenger along with my father and I was wearing a yellow shirt. Allah's Messenger said, "Sanah Sanah!" ('Abdullah, the sub-narrator said, "It means, 'Nice, nice!' in the Ethiopian language") Um Khalid added, "Then I started playing with the seal of Prophethood. My father admonished me. But Allah's Messenger said (to my father), "Leave her," Allah's Messenger (then addressing me) said, "May you live so long that your dress gets worn out, and you will mend it many times, and then wear another till it gets worn out (ie May Allah prolong your life)". (The sub-narrator, 'Abdullah aid, "That garment (which she was wearing remained usable for a long period").

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad's blessing of a young girl with a long life and his encouragement for her to enjoy her childhood. The Prophet Muhammad saw the young girl wearing a yellow shirt and said "Sanah Sanah!" which means "Nice nice!" in the Ethiopian language. He then allowed her to play with his seal of Prophethood despite being admonished by her father. He then blessed the girl with longevity by saying “May you live so long that your dress gets worn out, and you will mend it many times, and then wear another till it gets worn out”. This hadith teaches us that we should cherish our childhood as it is an important part of our lives that should be enjoyed while also reminding us of Allah's blessings on us in terms of health and longevity.
