Sahih al-Bukhari 5924 (Book 77, Hadith 139) #5683
Asking Permission Before Looking

SUMMARY: The Prophet ﷺ taught that one should not look at things unlawfully and that permission should be asked before doing so.

Narrated Sa'd: A man peeped into the house of the Prophet through a hole while the Prophet was scratching his head with a Midrai (a certain kind of comb). On that the Prophet said (to him), "If I had known you had been looking, then I would have pierced your eye with that instrument, because the asking of permission has been ordained so that one would not see things unlawfully".

QUICK LESSONS:
Ask for permission before entering someone else's property or belongings

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the importance of asking permission before looking at something. It was narrated by Sa'd, who said that he saw the Prophet scratching his head with a Midrai comb. When the Prophet noticed him, he said that if he had known earlier, he would have pierced his eye with it as a reminder to ask for permission before looking at something unlawfully. This teaches us to respect other people's privacy and not to look at things without their consent or knowledge. We must always remember to ask for permission before entering someone else's house or looking into their belongings without them knowing about it first.
