Sahih al-Bukhari 5866 (Book 77, Hadith 83) #5627
Wearing Rings in Islam

SUMMARY: The hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) wearing a ring with his name engraved on it, and how people followed suit. He then threw away his own ring and wore a silver one instead, which the people also started wearing.

Narrated Ibn'.Umar: Allah's Messenger wore a gold ring or a silver ring and placed its stone towards the palm of his hand and had the name 'Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah' engraved on it. The people also started wearing gold rings like it, but when the Prophet saw them wearing such rings, he threw away his own ring and said".I will never wear it," and then wore a silver ring, whereupon the people too started wearing silver rings. Ibn 'Umar added: After the Prophet Abu Bakr wore the ring, and then 'Umar and then 'Uthman wore it till it fell in the Aris well from 'Uthman.

QUICK LESSONS:
Respect for Others, Self-Improvement

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith talks about the Prophet Muhammad's practice of wearing a gold or silver ring with his name engraved on it. People began to follow suit and wear rings like this as well. However, when he saw them doing so, he threw away his own ring and wore a silver one instead. This was done to discourage people from imitating him too closely or trying to imitate him in any way that could be seen as disrespectful or inappropriate. The lesson here is that we should not try to imitate anyone else too closely but rather focus on our own spiritual growth and development while still respecting others around us. We should also strive to be humble in our actions so that we do not draw attention to ourselves unnecessarily or make ourselves appear better than others around us.
