Sahih al-Bukhari 5773-5775 (Book 76, Hadith 87) #5538
Avoiding Disease Spread Through Animals

SUMMARY: The hadith is about the importance of avoiding the spread of diseases by not mixing healthy and sick animals.

Narrated Abu Huraira: Allah's Messenger said, "No 'Adwa". Abu Huraira also said: The Prophet said, "The cattle suffering from a disease should not be mixed up with healthy cattle (or said "Do not put a patient with a healthy person as a precaution") Abu Huraira also said: Allah's Messenger said, "No 'Adwa". A bedouin got up and said, "Don't you see how camels on the sand look like deer but when a mangy camel mixes with them, they all get infected with mange?" On that the Prophet said, "Then who conveyed the (mange) disease to the first camel?"

QUICK LESSONS:
Take precautionary measures against spreading diseases among animals

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith emphasizes the importance of taking precautions to avoid spreading diseases. It is narrated by Abu Huraira that Prophet Muhammad said, “No 'Adwa” which means no contagion or transmission of disease from one animal to another. He also said that it is important to keep healthy animals away from those suffering from a disease in order to prevent them from getting infected as well. A bedouin then asked how this could be possible when camels on sand look like deer and when a mangy camel mixes with them, they all get infected with mange? To this, Prophet Muhammad replied that who conveyed the disease to the first camel? This shows us that we should take precautionary measures even if it seems impossible for a disease to spread because we do not know how it was transmitted in the first place.
