Sahih al-Bukhari 5736 (Book 76, Hadith 51) #5502
The Power of Reciting Surat-al-Fatiha

SUMMARY: The Prophet's companions used the recitation of Surat-al-Fatiha to cure a snake bite, and were rewarded with a flock of sheep.

Narrated Abu Sa'id Al-Khudri: Some of the companions of the Prophet came across a tribe amongst the tribes of the Arabs, and that tribe did not entertain them. While they were in that state, the chief of that tribe was bitten by a snake (or stung by a scorpion). They said, (to the companions of the Prophet ), "Have you got any medicine with you or anybody who can treat with Ruqya?" The Prophet's companions said, "You refuse to entertain us, so we will not treat (your chief) unless you pay us for it". So they agreed to pay them a flock of sheep. One of them (the Prophet's companions) started reciting Surat-al-Fatiha and gathering his saliva and spitting it (at the snake-bite). The patient got cured and his people presented the sheep to them, but they said, "We will not take it unless we ask the Prophet (whether it is lawful)". When they asked him, he smiled and said, "How do you know that Surat-al-Fatiha is a Ruqya? Take it (flock of sheep) and assign a share for me".

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith tells us about the power of reciting Surat al Fatiha. It is narrated by Abu Sa'id Al Khudri that some companions of the Prophet Muhammad came across an Arab tribe who refused to entertain them. However, when their chief was bitten by a snake or stung by a scorpion, they asked if anyone had any medicine or could treat with ruqya. The companions offered to treat him in exchange for payment and one companion started reciting surah al Fathiha while gathering his saliva and spitting it at the bite. Miraculously, this worked and cured the patient! His people then presented them with a flock of sheep as payment but they refused to take it until they asked the Prophet if it was lawful which he confirmed with a smile. He also said that they should assign him his share too! This hadith teaches us about how powerful recitation can be in curing physical ailments as well as spiritual ones. It also shows us how generous and kind our beloved Prophet Muhammad was even when faced with difficult situations such as being refused hospitality from an Arab tribe.
