Sahih al-Bukhari 5673 (Book 75, Hadith 33) #5447
The Mercy of Allah and Good Deeds

SUMMARY: No one can enter Paradise through their own good deeds, but only by the mercy of Allah. Therefore, it is important to do good deeds within our ability and not wish for death.

Narrated Abu Huraira: I heard Allah's Messenger saying, "The good deeds of any person will not make him enter Paradise". (ie, None can enter Paradise through his good deeds) They (the Prophet's companions) said, 'Not even you, O Allah's Messenger ?' He said, "Not even myself, unless Allah bestows His favor and mercy on me". So be moderate in your religious deeds and do the deeds that are within your ability: and none of you should wish for death, for if he is a good doer, he may increase his good deeds, and if he is an evil doer, he may repent to Allah".

QUICK LESSONS:
Do Good Deeds within Ability, Rely on Allah's Mercy

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith explains that no matter how many good deeds a person does, they cannot enter Paradise on their own merit. It is only through the mercy of Allah that one can be granted entrance into Paradise. The Prophet Muhammad also advises his companions to be moderate in their religious duties and to do what they are able to do without overburdening themselves. He also warns against wishing for death as it could lead to a decrease in good deeds if one is an evil-doer or prevent them from doing more if they are a righteous person. This hadith teaches us that we should strive to do as much good as we can while relying on the mercy of Allah for our ultimate salvation.
