Sahih al-Bukhari 5672 (Book 75, Hadith 32) #5446
Rewards of Spending

SUMMARY: A Muslim is rewarded for whatever they spend, except for when it is spent on building.

Narrated Qais bin Abi Hazim: We went to pay a visit to Khabbab (who was sick) and he had been branded (cauterized) at seven places in his body. He said, "Our companions who died (during the lifetime of the Prophet) left (this world) without having their rewards reduced through enjoying the pleasures of this life, but we have got (so much) wealth that we find no way to spend It except on the construction of buildings Had the Prophet not forbidden us to wish for death, I would have wished for it'. We visited him for the second time while he was building a wall. He said, A Muslim is rewarded (in the Hereafter) for whatever he spends except for something that he spends on building".

QUICK LESSONS:
Spend your money wisely and generously to help others as much as possible so you can receive rewards in the Hereafter.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks to the rewards that come from spending money in a meaningful way. Khabbab was sick and had been branded at seven places in his body, yet he was still spending his wealth on building something. He said that if the Prophet hadn't forbidden them from wishing for death, he would have wished for it because their companions who died during the Prophet's lifetime left without having their rewards reduced through enjoying the pleasures of this life. The hadith teaches us that we should be mindful of how we spend our money and not waste it on things that will not benefit us in any way. Instead, we should use our wealth to do good deeds and help others as much as possible so that we can receive rewards in the Hereafter.
