Sahih al-Bukhari 5545 (Book 73, Hadith 1) #5320
Slaughtering Sacrifice After Prayer on Id al-Adha

SUMMARY: The Prophet (ﷺ) taught that the first thing to do on the day of Id al-Adha is to offer prayer and then slaughter a sacrifice. He also said that whoever slaughters a sacrifice before the prayer, it will not be considered as Nusuk (sacrifice).

Narrated Al-Bara: The Prophet said (on the day of Idal-Adha), "The first thing we will do on this day of ours, is to offer the ('Id) prayer and then return to slaughter the sacrifice. Whoever does so, he acted according to our Sunna (tradition), and whoever slaughtered (the sacrifice) before the prayer, what he offered was just meat he presented to his family, and that will not be considered as Nusuk (sacrifice)". (On hearing that) Abu Burda bin Niyar got up, for he had slaughtered the sacrifice before the prayer, and said, "I have got a six month old ram". The Prophet said, 'Slaughter it (as a sacrifice) but it will not be sufficient for any-one else (as a sacrifice after you). Al-Bara' added: The Prophet said, "Whoever slaughtered (the sacrifice) after the prayer, he slaughtered it at the right time and followed the tradition of the Muslims".

QUICK LESSONS:
Offer prayers at right time, Follow Islamic traditions while performing acts of worship like sacrificing animals etc., Respect religious practices and rituals.

EXPLANATIONS:
On the day of Eid al-Adha, Muslims are commanded to offer prayer and then slaughter a sacrifice. This is in accordance with Islamic tradition. If someone slaughters their sacrifice before offering prayer, it will not be considered as an act of worship or qurbani. Abu Burda bin Niyar was one such person who had slaughtered his six month old ram before offering prayer but Prophet Muhammad ﷺ accepted his action and said that he had followed Muslim tradition even though it would not suffice for anyone else's qurbani after him.
