Sahih al-Bukhari 5537 (Book 72, Hadith 62) #5312
Refraining from Unfamiliar Foods

SUMMARY: Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) refrained from eating something he was unfamiliar with, even though it was not unlawful.

Narrated Khalid bin Al-Walid: Allah's Messenger and I entered the house of Maimuna. A roasted mastigure (a small lizard) was served. Allah's Messenger stretched his hand out (to eat of it) but some woman said, "Inform Allah's Messenger of what he is about to eat". So they said, "It is mastigure, O Allah's Messenger !" He withdrew his hand, whereupon I said, "O Allah's Messenger ! Is it unlawful?" He said, "No, but this is not found in the land of my people, so I dislike it". So I pulled the mastigure (a small lizard) towards me and ate it while Allah's Messenger was looking at me.

QUICK LESSONS:
Be careful when trying new foods as we should only consume things that are permissible according Islamic law and familiar enough for us to feel comfortable eating them .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the importance of refraining from unfamiliar foods. Allah's Messenger ﷺ and Khalid bin Al-Walid entered the house of Maimuna and a roasted mastigure was served. The women in the house noticed what Allah's Messenger ﷺ was about to eat and informed him that it was a mastigure, which he had never seen before. He then withdrew his hand, indicating that he did not want to eat it because it wasn't something familiar to him or found in his land. Khalid bin Al-Walid then asked if it was unlawful for them to eat, but Allah's Messenger ﷺ said no and simply expressed his dislike for the food due to its unfamiliarity. This teaches us that we should be careful when trying new foods as we should only consume things that are permissible according to Islamic law and familiar enough for us to feel comfortable eating them.
