Sahih al-Bukhari 5473 (Book 71, Hadith 8) #5249
Prohibiting Sacrifices and Slaughtering in Rajab

SUMMARY: It is not permissible to offer the first offspring of camels or sheep as a sacrifice to idols, nor is it permissible to slaughter a sheep during the month of Rajab.

Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet said, "Neither Fara' nor Atirah (is permissible):" Al-Fara' nor Atirah (is permissible):" Al- Fara' was the first offspring (of camels or sheep) which the pagans used to offer (as a sacrifice) to their idols. And Al-'Atira was (a sheep which was to be slaughtered) during the month of Rajab.

TOPICS
sacrifice  *  slaughter  *  paganism  *  rajab

QUICK LESSONS:
Worship only Allah; Abstain from idolatry and paganism; Refrain from unnecessary slaughtering in certain months such as Rajab .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith from Prophet Muhammad ﷺ prohibits two practices that were common among pagans at the time. The first practice was offering the first offspring of camels or sheep as a sacrifice to idols, known as Al-Fara'. The second practice was slaughtering a sheep during the month of Rajab, known as Al-'Atira. These practices are no longer allowed in Islam and should be avoided by all Muslims. Instead, Muslims should focus on worshipping Allah alone and abstaining from any form of idolatry or paganism. Furthermore, they should also avoid any form of animal cruelty by refraining from unnecessary slaughtering during certain months such as Rajab.
