Sahih al-Bukhari 5441 (Book 70, Hadith 69) #5215
Receiving Dates from Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)

SUMMARY: This hadith is about the companions of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) receiving dates from him and Abu Huraira's share being seven dates, one of which was a Hashafa.

Narrated Abu 'Uthman: I was a guest of Abu Huraira for seven days. Abu Huraira, his wife and his slave used to get up and remain awake for one-third of the night by turns. Each would offer the night prayer and then awaken the other. I heard Abu Huraira saying, "Allah's Messenger distributed dates among his companions and my share was seven dates, one of which was a Hashafa (a date which dried on the tree before it was fully ripe).

QUICK LESSONS:
Be generous with your possessions; Give gifts when you can; Strive for patience in difficult times

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the companions of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), who were given dates by him as a gift. Abu Huraira was among them and his share was seven dates, one of which was a Hashafa. A Hashafa is a date that dried on the tree before it fully ripened. This hadith shows us how generous and kind Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was to his companions, even giving them gifts like these dates. It also teaches us to be generous with our own possessions and to give gifts to those around us when we can. We should also strive to be patient in difficult times, just like Abu Huraira and his family did when they took turns staying up for one-third of the night in order to pray together.
