Sahih al-Bukhari 5432 (Book 70, Hadith 60) #5206
Kindness to the Poor

SUMMARY: The hadith is about Abu Huraira's poverty and how Ja'far bin Abi Talib was kind to the poor by feeding them with whatever was available in his house.

Narrated Abu Huraira: I used to accompany Allah's Messenger to fill my stomach; and that was when I did not eat baked bread, nor wear silk. Neither a male nor a female slave used to serve me, and I used to bind stones over my belly and ask somebody to recite a Qur'anic Verse for me though I knew it, so that he might take me to his house and feed me. Ja'far bin Abi Talib was very kind to the poor, and he used to take us and feed us with what ever was available in his house, (and if nothing was available), he used to give us the empty (honey or butter) skin which we would tear and lick whatever was in it.

QUICK LESSONS:
Be generous towards those who are less fortunate than you

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks of the kindness of Ja'far bin Abi Talib towards those who were less fortunate than him. It tells us that even though Abu Huraira did not have enough money to buy food, he would accompany Prophet Muhammad ﷺ in order to fill his stomach. He also mentions that he did not have a slave or silk clothing, and would bind stones over his belly when hungry. When Ja'far bin Abi Talib found out about this, he took pity on him and invited him into his home where he fed him with whatever food was available. If there was nothing available, then he gave them an empty honey or butter skin which they could tear open and lick whatever remained inside it. This hadith teaches us the importance of being generous towards those who are less fortunate than us and reminds us that we should always be thankful for what we have been blessed with by Allah SWT.
