Avaricious Eating and Belief in Allah

SUMMARY: A man who was an avaricious eater was told by Ibn 'Umar that the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said a non-believer eats in seven intestines. The man then replied that he believes in Allah and His Apostle.

Narrated 'Amr: Abu Nahik was avaricious eater. Ibn 'Umar said to him, "Allah's Messenger said, "A Kafir (unbeliever) eats in seven intestines (eats much)". On that Abu Nahik said, "But I believe in Allah and His Apostle ".

QUICK LESSONS:
Have faithfulness to God; Eat moderately; Be content with what one has been given; Do not overindulge oneself or waste food unnecessarily; Believe strongly in Allah's teachings.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the importance of not being an avaricious eater, which is known as Al-Israf in Arabic. Ibn 'Umar told Abu Nahik, who was an avaricious eater, that Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said a nonbeliever eats in seven intestines. However, Abu Nahik replied that he believes in Allah and His Apostle. This shows us how important it is to have faith and belief in Allah while also being mindful of our eating habits so we don't become too greedy or wasteful with food. We should be content with what we have been given and not overindulge ourselves or waste food unnecessarily.
