Sahih al-Bukhari 5227 (Book 67, Hadith 160) #5006
The Sense of Ghira in Islam

SUMMARY: The Prophet (ﷺ) saw a dream in which he asked whose palace it was and was told it belonged to Umar. Umar then wept when the Prophet (ﷺ) mentioned his sense of Ghira.

Narrated Abu Huraira: While we were sitting with Allah's Messenger , (he) Allah's Messenger said, "While I was sleeping, I saw a woman performing ablution beside a palace. I asked, "Whose palace is this?' It was said, 'This palace belongs to 'Umar'. Then I remembered his sense of Ghira and returned". On that 'Umar started weeping in that gathering and said, "O Allah's Messenger ! How dare I think of my self-respect being offended by you?"

QUICK LESSONS:
Have respect for yourself and others .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the importance of having a sense of Ghira, or self-respect, in Islam. It is narrated by Abu Huraira that while they were sitting with the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, he said that he had seen a dream where there was a woman performing ablution beside a palace and when asked whose palace it was, he was told it belonged to Umar. Upon hearing this, Umar started weeping and said how dare he think his self-respect would be offended by the Prophet ﷺ. This shows us how important having respect for oneself is in Islam as even mentioning something related to this made Umar weep out of respect for himself and for the Prophet ﷺ. We should all strive to have such strong feelings towards our own self-respect so that we can be respected by others too.
