Sahih al-Bukhari 507 (Book 8, Hadith 154) #490
Praying Behind a Sutra

SUMMARY: The Prophet (ﷺ) used to pray facing a she-camel as a sutra, and if the she-camel was provoked and moved, he would take its camel-saddle and put it in front of him and pray facing its back part.

Narrated Nafi': "The Prophet used to make his she-camel sit across and he would pray facing it (as a Sutra)". I asked, "What would the Prophet do if the she-camel was provoked and moved?" He said, "He would take its camel-saddle and put it in front of him and pray facing its back part (as a Sutra). And Ibn 'Umar used to do the same". (This indicates that one should not pray except behind a Sutra).

QUICK LESSONS:
Be mindful when you are praying; Respect animals; Have something in front of you while you are praying; Focus on your prayer without being disturbed by anything else.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith explains that when praying, one should always have something in front of them known as a sutrah. A sutrah is an object such as a wall or chair that serves as an obstruction between the person praying and any distractions around them. In this hadith, the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) used his she-camel as his sutrah. If the she-camel was provoked or moved while he was praying, he would take its saddle and place it in front of him so that he could continue to pray without being distracted by what was going on around him. This teaches us that we should always be mindful of our surroundings when we are praying so that we can focus on our prayer without being disturbed by anything else.
