Sahih al-Bukhari 5112 (Book 67, Hadith 49) #4895
Forbidden Practice of Ash-Shighar

SUMMARY: Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) forbade Ash-Shighar, which is a practice of exchanging daughters in marriage without paying Mahr.

Narrated Ibn 'Umar: Allah's Messenger forbade Ash-Shighar, which means that somebody marries his daughter to somebody else, and the latter marries his daughter to the former without paying Mahr.

QUICK LESSONS:
Pay mahr when getting married to someone else’s daughter
EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks about the practice of Ash-Shighar which is an exchange of daughters in marriage without paying the required dowry or mahr. This practice was forbidden by Allah's Messenger ﷺ as it does not provide any financial security to either party involved in the exchange. The mahr is an important part of marriage and should be paid to ensure that both parties are taken care off financially. It also serves as a sign of respect and appreciation for each other’s families. Therefore, this hadith teaches us that we should not engage in such practices and instead pay mahr when getting married to someone else’s daughter.
