Sahih al-Bukhari 5070 (Book 67, Hadith 8) #4854
Intention Determines Rewards

SUMMARY: The rewards of deeds are based on the intention behind them, and everyone will receive the reward for what they intended.

Narrated 'Umar bin Al-Khattab: The Prophet said, "The rewards (of deeds) are according to the intention, and everybody will get the reward for what he has intended. So whoever emigrated for Allah's and His Apostle's sake, his emigration was for Allah and His Apostle; and whoever emigrated for worldly benefits, or to marry a woman, then his emigration was for the thing for what he emigrated for". QUICK LESSONS:
Have pure intentions in all your actions .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith explains that when a person does something good or bad, their intentions behind it will determine the reward or punishment they receive. For example if someone emigrates to another country for Allah's sake and His Apostle's sake then their emigration is considered an act of worship and they will be rewarded accordingly. However if someone emigrates for worldly benefits such as money or to marry a woman then their intention was not pure and so they will not receive as much reward from Allah. This teaches us that we should always strive to have pure intentions in all our actions so that we can be rewarded by Allah in this life and the hereafter.
