The Importance of Marriage in Islam

SUMMARY: The hadith is about the importance of marriage and how even the best person of the Muslim nation, Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), had a large number of wives.

Narrated Sa'id bin Jubair: Ibn 'Abbas asked me, "Are you married?" I replied, "No". He said, "Marry, for the best person of this (Muslim) nation (ie, Muhammad) of all other Muslims, had the largest number of wives".
حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ الْحَكَمِ الأَنْصَارِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عَوَانَةَ، عَنْ رَقَبَةَ، عَنْ طَلْحَةَ الْيَامِيِّ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ، قَالَ قَالَ لِي ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ هَلْ تَزَوَّجْتَ قُلْتُ لاَ‏.‏ قَالَ فَتَزَوَّجْ فَإِنَّ خَيْرَ هَذِهِ الأُمَّةِ أَكْثَرُهَا نِسَاءً‏.‏

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith highlights the importance of marriage in Islam. It was narrated by Sa'id bin Jubair that Ibn 'Abbas asked him if he was married and when he replied no, Ibn 'Abbas said that he should marry as even the best person from this Muslim nation, Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), had a large number of wives. This shows us that marriage is highly encouraged in Islam and it is an important part of life for Muslims. It also teaches us to follow in the footsteps of our beloved Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). Marriage brings many blessings with it such as companionship, love, mercy and peace which are all essential for leading a happy life. Therefore, we should strive to get married if we are able to do so as it will bring many rewards both in this world and hereafter.
