Sahih al-Bukhari 4903 (Book 65, Hadith 423) #4684
The Revelation of Verse 63:1

SUMMARY: The hadith is about how the Prophet (ﷺ) was informed of a plan to expel the poorer people from Medina and how Allah revealed a verse in confirmation of what he was told.

Narrated Zaid bin Arqam: We went out with the Prophet : on a journey and the people suffered from lack of provisions. So 'Abdullah bin Ubai said to his companions, "Don't spend on those who are with Allah's Messenger , that they may disperse and go away from him". He also said, "If we return to Medina, surely, the more honorable will expel therefrom the meaner. So I went to the Prophet and informed him of that. He sent for 'Abdullah bin Ubai and asked him, but 'Abdullah bin Ubai swore that he did not say so. The people said, "Zaid told a lie to 'Allah's Messenger ". What they said distressed me very much. Later Allah revealed the confirmation of my statement in his saying:-- '(When the hypocrites come to you'. (63:1) So the Prophet called them that they might ask Allah to forgive them, but they turned their heads aside. (Concerning Allah's saying: 'Pieces of wood propped up,' Zaid said; They were the most handsome men)

QUICK LESSONS:
Always be truthful even if no one believes you .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about an incident that happened when the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and his companions were on a journey. During this journey, some people suggested that they should not spend money on those who were with the Prophet ﷺ so that they would leave him. When Zaid bin Arqam heard this suggestion, he went to tell the Prophet ﷺ about it. However, when asked about it, Abdullah bin Ubai denied saying such a thing. As a result, some people accused Zaid of lying to the Prophet ﷺ which made him very sad. Later on, Allah revealed verse 63:1 which confirmed what Zaid said and showed that he was telling the truth all along. This verse also warned against hypocrites who try to spread lies and deceive others for their own gain or benefit. In addition to this lesson, we can also learn from this hadith that we should always be truthful even if no one believes us because eventually our truth will be revealed by Allah Himself if He wills it so.
