Sahih al-Bukhari 4615 (Book 65, Hadith 137) #4398
Marriage in Islam

SUMMARY: The Prophet (ﷺ) forbade the companions from castrating themselves and instead allowed them to marry a woman temporarily by giving her a garment.

Narrated 'Abdullah: We used to participate in the holy wars carried on by the Prophet and we had no women (wives) with us. So we said (to the Prophet )".Shall we castrate ourselves?" But the Prophet forbade us to do that and thenceforth he allowed us to marry a woman (temporarily) by giving her even a garment, and then he recited: "O you who believe! Do not make unlawful the good things which Allah has made lawful for you".

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about marriage in Islam. It was narrated by Abdullah ibn Mas'ud who was one of the companions of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. In this hadith, some of his companions asked him if they could castrate themselves as they did not have any wives with them during their travels for holy wars. However, the Prophet ﷺ forbade them from doing so and instead allowed them to marry a woman temporarily by giving her even a garment. He then recited verse 2:187 from Surah Al-Baqarah which states that Allah has made lawful certain things for believers and it is not permissible to make those things unlawful. This hadith teaches us that marriage is an important part of life in Islam and it should be done according to Islamic laws and regulations rather than taking extreme measures such as castration which are forbidden in Islam. It also teaches us that Allah has made certain things lawful for believers so we should not make those unlawful ourselves or try to restrict others from doing so without any valid reason or proof from Quran or Sunnah.
