Sahih al-Bukhari 4517 (Book 65, Hadith 42) #4303
Fasting or Feeding Poor Persons as Ransom

SUMMARY: This hadith is about Ka'b bin Ujra, who was taken to the Prophet (ﷺ) and was told to either fast for three days or feed six poor persons as a ransom for shaving his head.

Narrated 'Abdullah bin Maqal: I sat with Ka'b bin Ujra in this mosque, ie Kufa Mosque, and asked him about the meaning of: "Pay a ransom (ie Fidya) of either fasting or . . . . (2.196)" He said, "I was taken to the Prophet while lice were falling on my face. The Prophet said, 'I did not think that your trouble reached to such an extent. Can you afford to slaughter a sheep (as a ransom for shaving your head)?' I said, 'No'. He said, 'Then fast for three days, or feed six poor persons by giving half a Sa of food for each and shave your head'. So the above Verse was revealed especially for me and generally for all of you".

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about Ka'b bin Ujra, who was taken to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and was told that he must either fast for three days or feed six poor persons as a ransom for shaving his head. The Prophet ﷺ asked him if he could afford to slaughter a sheep, but when Ka'b said no, the Prophet ﷺ suggested these two alternatives instead. This hadith teaches us that we should be generous in helping those in need and not be stingy with our wealth. It also shows us how merciful and compassionate the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was towards those who were less fortunate than himself. We can learn from this example of kindness that it is important to always help others whenever we can, even if it means sacrificing something of our own. Furthermore, this hadith also reminds us of the importance of fasting during Ramadan and other times throughout the year in order to gain Allah's blessings and mercy.
