Sahih al-Bukhari 4399 (Book 64, Hadith 422) #4195
Performing Hajj on Behalf of Others

SUMMARY: A woman asked the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) if she could perform Hajj on behalf of her elderly father who was unable to do so himself. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said yes.

Narrated Ibn 'Abbas: A woman from the tribe of Khath'am asked for the verdict of Allah's Messenger (regarding something) during Hajjat-ul-Wada' while Al-Fadl bin 'Abbas was the companion-rider behind Allah's Messenger . She asked, "Allah's ordained obligation (ie compulsory Hajj) enjoined on His slaves has become due on my old father who cannot sit firmly on the riding animal. Will it be sufficient if I perform the Hajj on his behalf?" He said, "Yes".

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about a woman from the tribe of Khath'am who asked the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ if she could perform Hajj on behalf of her elderly father who was unable to do so himself. The Prophet's response was that it would be sufficient for her to perform the pilgrimage in his stead. This hadith teaches us that we should show compassion and sacrifice for our elders and those around us who are not able to fulfill their obligations due to age or other factors. It also shows us how much respect and reverence we should have for our beloved prophet as he gave a compassionate answer even when faced with a difficult question from someone outside his own tribe. We can learn from this hadith that it is important to always think about others before ourselves and put their needs first when possible.
