Sahih al-Bukhari 417 (Book 8, Hadith 67) #411
Spitting Etiquette During Prayer

SUMMARY: This hadith explains that when praying, one should not spit towards the Qibla, but instead should either spit on their left or under their foot. Alternatively, they can take a corner of their sheet and spit in it.

Narrated Anas: The Prophet saw expectoration (on the wall of the mosque) in the direction of the Qibla and scraped it off with his hand. It seemed that he disliked it and the sign of disgust was apparent from his face. He said, "If anyone of you stands for the prayer, he is speaking in private to his Lord, (or) his Lord is between him and his Qibla, therefore he should not spit towards his Qibla, but he could spit either on his left or under his foot". Then he took the corner of his sheet and spat in it, folded it and said, "Or do this".

QUICK LESSONS:
Respectfully pray without making noise or doing anything harmful during prayer time

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about how to behave while praying. The Prophet Muhammad saw someone spitting towards the direction of the Qibla and he was displeased with this action. He then explained that when one is praying, they are speaking privately to Allah and so they should not be spitting towards the direction of the Qibla as it is disrespectful. Instead, he suggested that people either spit on their left or under their foot as an alternative option. He also suggested taking a corner of your sheet and spitting into it if needed. This hadith teaches us to be respectful while we are in prayer by avoiding any actions which may be seen as disrespectful such as spitting towards the direction of the Qibla or making noise during prayer time. It also teaches us to think ahead before we do something which may cause harm or disrespect to others around us during prayer time.
