Sahih al-Bukhari 4244, 4245 (Book 64, Hadith 281) #4055
Exchange of Goods

SUMMARY: The Prophet (ﷺ) taught that one should not exchange inferior quality goods for superior quality goods, but rather sell the inferior quality goods and use the money to buy superior quality goods.

Narrated Abu Sa'id Al-Khudri and Abu Huraira: Allah's Messenger appointed a man as the ruler of Khaibar who later brought some Janib (ie dates of good quality) to the Prophet. On that, Allah's Messenger said (to him)".Are all the dates of Khaibar like this?" He said, "No, by Allah, O Allah's Messenger ! But we take one Sa of these (dates of good quality) for two or three Sa's of other dates (of inferior quality)". On that, Allah's Messenger said, "Do not do so, but first sell the inferior quality dates for money and then with that money, buy Janib".

QUICK LESSONS:
Sell Inferior Items For Money And Use That Money To Buy Superior Items .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about exchanging goods. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught that one should not exchange inferior quality goods for superior quality ones, but rather sell the inferior quality ones and use the money to buy superior ones. This teaches us an important lesson in economics; it is better to trade with money than with items of unequal value. It also teaches us a lesson in fairness; we should not take advantage of someone else's misfortune by offering them something of lesser value in exchange for something they have that is more valuable. We must always strive to be fair when trading or exchanging items with others, even if it means taking a financial loss ourselves.
